Update on visit to Autism Foundation by Dr. Syed A. Imtiaz

During my recent visit to Bangladesh I had the opportunity to visit the Autism Foundation. This is a brief account of the visit. The facility is located in Shamoli area on a four storied rented building. Currently, they have 132 students, distributed over two shifts, morning and day.   The class sizes are very small, 6~8 students in each class.. Each class is nicely decorated. Each class has two teachers and one staff to help the students. Students are classified into these classes according to their ability, aptitude and needs. As they make progress in their communication and other activities they are shifted to a new class, encouraging enough, this year they are planning to shift two students to normal school. The principal took me to different classes. I saw first hand their teaching methods. In some classes children’s are taught basic communication skills, some classes they are painting or doing handicraft. I saw some of the paintings of the students. Those are amazing, last year they made a calendar with these paintings. One young girl sang a song to me. It was very melodious. The school also have a separate vocational training class where they are taught pottery, block printing and other income generating skills. Each year the school arranges fares where they sell their product.

With the funding from APW the school created a Gym/play place on the ground floor. The Gym is equipped with treadmills, trempolins, exercise balls etc. The students really like their Gym class, I saw children merrily jumping up and down on the trempolin. These physical activities are integral part of their training. It was a very emotional experience to see the small children trying to get on with their lives. I was really amazed to see the kind of care and love the instructors extend to these ill fated children.  Also, I was very impressed by the planning, organization and the personal touch they have put in this organization. We also talked briefly about the needs and future avenues of cooperation between APW and Autism Foundation. The main problem for the school is, not having its own building.. It is increasingly getting difficult to cope with rising rent. Recently they applied to the ministry of social welfare of Bangladesh government seeking a permanent place for the school. They are also trying to get the registration from NGO bureau of Bangladesh Government. This will open up new sources of funding for the organization, make the organization eligible to apply to foreign donor agencies for funding. APW can be particularly helpful in this regard. One of the requirements for the registration is to show that the organization was successful in securing foreign donations. The school has requested APW’s help for this purpose. Once I get the detailed information from the school I will forward it for APW’s consideration.

The Chairperson of the organization, Dr. Rownak Hfiz, thanked APW for the continued support. She is also very eager to bring you to school and has asked me for your contact in Bangladesh. She would like to invite you to the school and show the activities of the school. I would also like to request you to visit the school if you could manage some time. I am sure it will be a very fulfilling experience for you to see how APW’s help is making a difference.
